About Blato

Travelling forty kilometres along the road from the town of Korcula, you will arrive in Blato. This pretty town is home to many islanders, many who sing or perform in the traditional battle dance Kumpanija. Wandering around the hilly streets during your holiday to Korcula will provide you with great views. Many pilgrims flock to Blato to pay their respects at the temple dedicated to Maria Petković, who was the founder of the only religious community founded in Croatia. With few cafes or restaurants in town, most visitors stay in the nearby seaside resorts that have more to offer.

Why Stay in Blato or Prizba?

Accommodation in Prizba

Despite it being a pretty and historic town, many people will not be inspired to stay in Blato. The lack of tourist facilities mean most people head for accommodation in Prigradica, the harbour to the north, or the bays of Prizba and Grscica on the south coast. The town of Blato is certainly worth a visit however for a day or afternoon, or part of a Korcula Island Tour.

The nearby bays provide plenty of swimming and relaxing opportunities.

Things To Do in Blato

Patron Saint

Hidden amongst the tightly knitted stone houses is a charming folk and ethnographic museum called Ethno House “Barilo. Here, the house once lived in by the Barilo family has been turned into a living museum displaying various items, from farming tools to a kitchen and bedroom embellished with artefacts, revealing how this evidently wealthy family once lived.  After a tour of the house you can sample an array of homemade liqueurs, and other delights such as caramelised almonds and flavoured honeys, some of which are a must purchase.

On the central paved square sits the All Saints Church which dates from the fourteenth-century and a charming baroque Loggia built in 1700. The relics of the town's Patron Saint are held in a Chapel in the Church. The parish church is fairly traditional and worth a visit and the square provides picturesque photo opportunities.

Enjoy the sun or the shade in Blato's beautifully landscaped park, opened in 2011.

Take a moment for contemplation and visit the Sanctuary of Blessed Marija of Jesus Crucified Petkovic. Born in Blato in 1892, Maria Petkovicć tirelessly devoted her life to help others, particularly orphaned and poor children. The sanctuary is housed in the monastery where Maria founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy. Follow the signs a short walk from the centre of the town.

Be sure to watch the Kumpanija, the knightly sword dance which is performed on the town’s Saint Day celebration on the 28th April, as well as on other festive days throughout the summer.

After a few hours of exploring the streets of Blato taking in the history and culture, why not head to another glorious Korcula bay such as Prizba and take a dip in the Adriatic sea. It's no surprise that Croatia has offically been recognised as having some of the cleanest shorelines and surrounding seas in Europe.

April 28th - Town's Patron Saint Day

The Feast Day of St Vincenca, a Roman whom was martyred at an early age, is celebrated by the residents of Blato. The festivities include a procession around the town carrying her relics and a performance of the Kumpanija.

What Is?

Kumpanija is a gallant sword dance represting the people's defence of their village, centuries past. A set of complicated dance steps paced by the drums and bagpipes, reach a pinnacle with the waving of a large flag. At the end, girls join the dancing celebration.
